iOS4 on iPhone 3GS problems with GoogleMail via Exchange?!

So, I’m one of those people whose greatest virtue isn’t patience. 🙂

Minutes after its release I HAD to install iOS4 onto my iPhone 3GS. Since there’s no upgrade procedure implemented (yet?), upgrading took just short of a lifetime: the iPhone was completely wiped, then iTunes installed iOS4, then the backup was restored to the iPhone. All in all, an probably thanks to the enormously big Navigon app, this took almost 90 minutes. Everything looked fine… but after a couple of hours of normal usage I ran into a „little“ problem…

I unplugged the iPhone at around 10 am with a fully charged battery. After just four hours (during which I received 10 mails, 5 push messages and made one call of approx. 3 minutes) the battery was down to 63%. Normally it should still be in then 90s…

It seemed as if, somehow, Mail.app crashed and went wild – draining battery like crazy and heating up the device. Back home, I deleted my Mail accounts, rebooted the iPhone, added my Mail accounts again (manually) and recharged the iPhone to the fullest. During the next 5 hours (in a region with full 3G coverage) I received another 15 mails, 10 push notifications and 1 text message, which I also replied to. The battery was down to 53%.

This morning, I downloaded the „iPhone Configuration Utility“ to gain access to the iPhones „console output“. You can find the, in my eyes, relevant parts below this post. There are some timeouts for com.apple.mobilemail.autofetch and a few reports of an EASIconnection dying with „Error Domain:NSURLErrorDomain Code=1001“ which obviously means „This operation couldn’t be completed“. Furthermore, from time to time, the EASIASFolderItemsSyncTask fails.

As of now, I assume that this is some kind of problem between Mail.app on my iPhone and the Googlemail server, which I’m accessing via ActiveSync/Exchange, since I’d like to get my mails pushed to me.

Right now I deleted the ActiveSync/Exchange account and added my Google Apps account as an IMAP account. I’ll to wait an see if this is a „workaround“…

UPDATE 1: This is most certainly a problem of iOS4 in combination with Googlemail via ActiveSync/Exchange. Why I am so certain about this? Well, the problem does neither occur with GMail over IMAP nor with other Exchange servers (tested with the Exchange server of the company I work for and nuevasync.com). Apple, Google – go fix this!?

UPDATE 2: Miggs (from the comments below this article) seems to be right: a full reset of the iPhone followed by a fresh configuration (not restored from the latest backup) did fix this problem. At least I didn’t see any errors in the log for the last couple of hours. I will, of course, observe this over the next hours and days – and will keep you posted.

UPDATE 3: Damn! „error syncing folder“ returned. 🙁 However, only after I activated the Mail part of my MobileMe Account on my iPhone. Deactivated it again. Again: playing the waiting game…

UPDATE 4: Configured everything from scratch – again.

MobileMe: Working perfectly well. GMail IMAP: Working perfectly well. GMail through third party Exchange server (nuevasync.com): Working perfectly well. GMail through its own Exchange server: Working perfectly well – IF ON WIFI. As soon as I’m changing my connection to 3G, MobileMail goes bananas:

UPDATE 5:
Reader Oli just pointed me to another problem: if an email is being send not directly via MobileMail.app, but from another App using MobileMail.app’s API, the mail won’t be send. Instead it will stay in MobileMail.app’s outbox until you open MobileMail.app and send it away manually (that is: by tapping on the „Refresh“-button (that little circle-arrow-thingy)).
However, this behaviour does not seem to be connected to the problems stated above, since it occurs with both, Exchange and IMAP accounts.

UPDATE 6:

So, today Apple released iOS4 to the public. Up until now I couldn’t figure out wether the problem is fixed with this release or not – right now I’m getting NO connection to m.google.com AT ALL. However, since http://m.google.com delivers a 502-error at the moment, I guess this is some problem on Googles end. I’ll wait and see wether this problems fixes itself over night.
Fetching/Sending mails via IMAP does still work as expected – BUT syncing contacts doesn’t work at all. Neither withActiveSync/Exchange nor with IMAP.

UPDATE 7:

This setup is working for me as of now:
E-mail: you@yourdomain.com (or @gmail.com, if you’re not using Google Apps on your own Domain)
Domain: yourdomain.com (or @gmail.com, if you’re not using Google Apps on your own Domain)
User: username (without the @yourdomain.com/@gmail.com)
Everything synced, everything is able to push.

UPDATE 8:

Wow, that didn’t last long. GMail Exchange with push and all still works – but now everything is back to what it was when I wrote the original article. Battery goes down like crazy. The phone is lying next to me, doing nothing and I can actually watch the percentage shrink… at an approx. rate of 1% every 10 minutes. Back to IMAP. My new, shiny iPhone4 will arrive tomorrow. Hope, the problems won’t haunt me with the new device (yes, I do know that this is (most likely) a software issue… but still…).

Im having the exact same problem. Im running gmail push via active sync/exchange. Mail and calender sync. And battery performance is very poor. Iphone gets very hot on the backside, around the apple and the battery is draining. Keep us updated about better battery life with imap.

    • Thanks for letting me know that I’m not alone with this. 🙂
      I’ll keep you posted.

I was wondering, how did you get 3G internet to work on the iOS 4.0. I can only get WiFi to work, not Edge or 3G

    • Hey Lucas.

I actually didn’t get it to work. It just worked right out of the box. I’m situated in Germany, use a T-Mobile (official provider for Germany) SIM card and have a unlocked iPhone 3GS from Italy (where they’re sold unlocked, so no Jailbreak or „custom unlock“).

I had the same issue but solved the problem…….here’s what I did:

    – Deleted all mail accounts from the iPhone
    – Performed a full reset
    – Synced the iPhone to iTunes
    – Reinstalled the email accounts
    – For all email accounts that had folders – did a download on a wifi network, including the „sent“ and „trash“ folders
    – Synced again with iTunes

Battery drain is gone and phone is operating normal

I think it had something to do with trying to update your mail files and folders and getting hung up – thus constantly drawing power to continually reach the servers…….could be wrong but this worked for me

Please advice what do you mean with „full reset“

    • I restored the iPhone in iTunes and then configured it as a new iPhone, read: without restoring the backup.

        • Yep. But don’t use the backup file when restoring. And keep in mind: though it seems to have helped Miggs (see comment from a few days ago), it didn’t really work for me.

I’m having the exact same problem too. Some messages (via Exchange/ActiveSync Google) arrive but then are “not downloaded” from the server… so I can only see the “header”.

Then attempts to send/receive more often than not produces TimeOuts. I haven’t done anything yet to try to fix it, but I guess I’ll try deleteing the account and starting from scratch with it.

  15. Hi Martin,

this is, exensively, being discussed over at the Googl Help Forum: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thr

There are hundreds of people complaining about „our“ issues. I think a solution will be found shortly.

I do have the feeling that iOS drains more battery and more quickly, but not as bad as you describe.

I did install from scratch though and didn’t restore. I’m also using nuevasync.com and it seems to work fine. Just my Nokia has issues lately, but that’s a different story 😉

    • On my OLD 🙂 3GS I, too, had the impression that the problem occured only with Google’s Exchange server… strange…

At the Apple support forum there was a hint that works: Turn off Thread-View.

But I love this feature. I think this is an Apple Bug

  21. Hey.

    Thanks for your comment.
I refuse to believe that this an Apple problem, since it works fine with other Exchange servers. Even with nuevasync.com, which is a third-party-exchange server for Googlemail.

Bought 2, iPhone 3GS about 9 months ago. About 3 months ago, one started dropping calls. I spoke to ATT & Apple. ATT did some things to „reset the phone to the tower“, so they say. Apple did nothing. The problem began getting worse. If I’m talking on the phone and get a text, the call will drop. Always shows 3 to 4 bars in signal. Called ATT 9 times since the problem started, called Apple 3 times, and ATT also did a 3 way conference call with Apple & me, twice.

Apple swears it is a software problem with ATT sim card, so ATT replaced the sim card. Did not help. ATT swears it is a hardware problem. Long story short, I have been paying over 100.00 for the past 3 months, but can’t make calls longer than 20 seconds. Home button also started acting up. Sometimes you have to push it very hard several times to get any reaction. And you have to push it on the right hand side of the button or it will not work.

Apple finally gave in, because the hardware warranty is still good, and said to take it to the local Apple store for replacement, because of the home button, not because it was dropping calls. Well, Apple store in Lafayette Louisiana does not handle iPhones….hmmm there’s a kick in the teeth. Apple tells me to go to THAT store, but that store is useless when it comes to phones.

So, I bring the phone back home, and called ATT again. This time to cancel the account. I have been a ping pong ball between Apple & ATT long enough.

Again, they do conference call with Apple, but now Apple wants 35.00 from me to send them the phone… why?? The phone only weighs a few ounces, I can FedEx overnight for about 15.00. I refused to pay anything. It’s under warranty, and they have been shinning me on for 3 months. I told ATT that I wanted to end the conference call with Apple and proceed with canceling the contract. ATT said I had to pay a penalty for canceling early. I told them to take me to court, I refuse to pay that also, simply because I have paid over 300.00 in the last 3 months for service that I didn’t get. The phone is a great iPod, but a terrible phone during the last 3 months.

So, then ATT steps up, and offers me a free phone upgrade, 3 months early.  I was surprised, but interested. I refused their offer for another iPhone, simply because of Apple. I would never ever buy another iPhone. Not that they are all bad phones, but because support is non-exsistant, even with warrenty and Apple care. Apple has offered absolutely no support in the past 3 months. They have done nothing all the way through this nightmare, but blame ATT’s network, which is bull. I can use the other iPhone, make a call and talk for hours, hang up, call the same person with the bad phone, and the call drops within 20 seconds. I know it’s not the network. I did take ATT’s offer for the HTC 4 Inspire. My total out of pocket cost for this phone was 4.06.

ATT waved all the fees and didn’t ask me for anything except 4.06 which was some kind of tax that they couldn’t get around.

So, be careful spending money on Apple care…. because Apple, really doesn’t care!
